Iron, Manganese
|
Iron is one of the most common elements in the
Earth’s crust, so it’s not surprising that it is found in water sources. Some groundwater wells in particular can
have high levels of iron. Manganese is
often found in combination with iron. Iron is usually found in two forms in water –
dissolved iron and particles of iron oxide.
Dissolved iron is invisible in the water; however,
when exposed to air it quickly converts to particles of iron oxide. These iron oxide particles are a
reddish-brown colour, making the water unsightly and causing stains on your
fixtures and clothes. Manganese causes
brownish-black stains. Both iron and
manganese give water an unpleasant taste. Dissolved iron, manganese, and odours are easily removed
by a special iron filter,
which combines air injection and an automatic backwashing filter. Particles of iron oxide can be removed by
filtration alone. Limited amounts of
iron and manganese are removed by a water softener. MacDonald Water Systems can help you find solutions
