Cryptosporidium and Giardia are parasites that cause serious intestinal illnesses know as giardiasis or "beaver fever" and cryptosporidiosis.

These parasites live and reproduce in the intestines of infected people or animals.  When they reproduce, they release hard-shelled cysts into the feces.

Water contaminated with these hard-shelled cysts is more difficult to treat than other disease-causing organisms.  Giardia may be killed by extended contact with chlorine.

It is generally recommended that water at risk of containing these cysts be treated with a combination of chlorine and microfiltration or ultra-violet disinfection.
